How little time indeed do human beings allot for spiritual reflections, even though we ourselves, our real ego, our spirit, is a part of the spiritual world, simply through the very fact that we originate in the Spiritual Realm. This is our true home, Paradise, that we left in the urge and longing to become conscious.
Even here on earth, a person who immigrates to another country does not forget his homeland. At the least, he thinks about it now and then and is often overcome with homesickness for the land of his earthly origin.
But we no longer know anything about our spiritual home that lies above us in Paradise. Not even a divining of it arises within us. And yet our spirit, filled with a repressed longing, is always waiting for us to tear down the dark walls built through our human guilt so that our gaze may become free and focused towards the Light.
We always have time enough for material things and earthly matters, but there is never any time to spare for spiritual investigation and seeking, which is, in fact, essential for our ascent out of this world of perishable matter. Indeed the physical world is only meant as a temporary place of learning, of experiencing and of development.
Of course we should produce material things and enjoy them with pleasure, but we must not place the acquisition of earthly possessions above spiritual gain, which alone mediates eternal values to us.
Only these values that we are able to obtain through genuine inner experiencing, such as firm convictions and a sincere trust in God, give us strong support in the beyond. But earthly principles that we acquire through the help of our intellect remain behind after physical death along with our brain that produces the intellect.
It is just this intellect that so often stifles an awakening and longing of the spirit, pushing aside rich experiences and abundant recognitions, declaring that we have no time for them.
May we all, through the pressures of earthly activities, swing ourselves upward more and more to devote sufficient time for spiritual seeking. It will bring our spirit multiple gains, here on earth as well as in the beyond that no earthly wealth, however great, can outweigh.
Every spiritual seeking will help to uplift us, be it the search for the answer to the origin of the human spirit, its purpose in Creation, life after death, spiritual power through which we live and exist, or whether we seek to understand our free will, our responsibility, our fate, or repeated earth lives.
No time for spiritual things! This can only be the lazy excuse of the intellect, because due to its nature it cannot grasp spiritual concepts. Its field of activity lies solely in the physical world.
The spirit however, is eternal and does not make excuses. It always has time for spiritual things as soon as we allow it to awake its longing for the Luminous Heights.
